What is an eID?
An electronic identification (eID) is a digital solution for proof of identity of citizens or organizations, for example in view to access benefits or services provided by government authorities, banks or other companies, for mobile payments, etc. There are two most used forms of eID including biometric passport and electronic identification card (eIC). Both are physical identities that can be used for online and offline personal identification or authentication.
What's inside an eID?
The eID card/passport contains a chip containing:
- The same information as legible on the card
- The address/personal information of the cardholder
- The identity – any signature keys, fingerprints, and certificates
